Eye For An Eye, Tooth For A Tooth Over the past decade there has been much controversy over the standard reprimand for murder, capital punishment, in the state of Texas. Many residents feel the punishment should be equal to the crime; others however, feel that you can not stop killers from killing by killing. When surveyed, 61% of Texas residents supported the death penalty while 14% were not sure, leaving a mere 25% opposing (TCADP). Capital punishment was declared "cruel and unusual punishment" by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 29, 1972. There were 45 men on death row in Texas and 7 in county jails with a death sentence. All of the sentences were commuted to life sentences by the Governor of Texas, and death row was clear by March 1973 (TDCJ). In 1973, revision to the Texas Penal Code once again allowed assessment of the death penalty and allowed for executions to resume effective January 1, 1974 (TDJC). Between 1819 and 1923, hanging was the standard execution method; in 1923, death by electrocution was adopted in the state of Texas (TDJC). In 1977, Texas adopted lethal injection as means of execution (TDJC). Texas residents are divided into two major groups on this issue; there are death, punishment, texas, pro-death, murderers, innocent, penalty, murder, life, , tdjc, residents, others, lwop, killing, execution, crime, corporal, been, while, tooth, stop, state, standard, should, sentences, save, row, prison, penal, over, made, lead, inmates, feel, fear
