Decriminalization of Marijuana
The controversy behind legalizing marijuana is a topic that has been raging in the U.S. for quite some time. Ever since Harry J. Anslingler, the commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and author of Marijuana: Assassin of Youth, brought the evils of marijuana into the public eye there has been a negative stigma associated with marijuana use. Ever since then the government has looked down upon marijuana smokers and has been constantly trying to eradicate marijuana from our country. However, the government has overlooked many factors, including the numerous advantages that decriminalizing, or legalizing pot would have on our country.
The current drug policy in the U.S. is obviously failing miserably. Drug abuse is a widespread problem in the U.S. and the problem will only get worse. But is the government doing any good in its war against marijuana' Every year the government spends about $7.5 billion on marijuana prohibition. If they werent so closed minded this money could be redirected to other things such as education, or trying to get rid of harder, more dangerous drugs like cocaine and heroin.
