Manifest Destiny Manifest Destiny Discussion Manifest Destiny was the expansion of the American way of life from the East Coast to the West Coast by a significant number of Americans during the 1800s. Manifest Destiny came about for many reasons. European and Colonial problems of Christianizing and racism, problems with mass urban population, ideals of nation building, and generous land-grant policies were just a few reasons. Capitalism and Industrialization were brought about because of the need for resources and expansion. Slavery played a vital part due to the planters needing new slave territories. The Monroe Doctrine of 1824 brought about political motivations of the United States to continue their Western Hemisphere dominance and national security. Also, there was the motivation for economic power in the Pacific. The Westward expansion between 1783 and 1853 were as follows. In 1783 the Treaty of Paris brought about the U.S. acquiring lands between the Appalachians and Mississippi River as a result of the American Revolution. In 1803 the United States acquired the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon for five million dollars. Napoleon needed the money for the wars in Europe.
