Fronde The Fronde, or Slingshot Tumults, were a series of uncoordinated revolts against the regency of Cardinal Mazarin and Anne of Austria. The causes of these uprising vary from economic to the fact that both leaders of the regency were foreigners. The regency’s subjects, including very powerful nobles hated them because Anne was a Habsburg and Mazarin was Italian. Resentment grew because of the cost of battle and several years of bad harvests. These events brought France to its collective knees. Once these events took their toll on the nobles and subjects they expressed their disgust with Mazarin.
