In February 1947 Britain told the United States that they would no longer be able to provide military aide to Greece and Turkey. By Britain doing this, it left the option of a Soviet takeover of such weak and depleted governments. By Soviet control over Greece and Turkey the possibility of communism could spread as far as Iran and eventually into Central and Western Europe. The European economy and government was in shambles after World War II, which led them to look for a new form of government to ease the downfall. So as a result of British abandonment the United States President, Harry S. Truman, created the Truman Doctrine. This doctrine changed the way the Cold War would be fought over the next forty years. The Truman Doctrine was a realistic response to Soviet aggression by controlling and containing the spread of communism to other countries in economic and political need, which took effort to convince a cost-conscious Congress and an American public opinion that was not yet fully aware of the extended role that the United States was quickly assuming. The effects of the Doctrine also affected United States foreign policy
