African Indepence Movement
The early decades of the twentieth century started nationalism and revolutions in Africa. Many Africans fought in World War I in the British and French armies. They hoped that afterwards they would have a say in the government of their nation. They sought to work with the colonial powers for purpose of securing reform.
In spite of the fact that Africans showed themselves to be mature and capable of running their own countries, the people would not be cooperative in bringing about proper reform. As a result, the African workers formed their own unions and tried to gain benefits for themselves. Nigerian women protested the high taxes that were levied by the British on the goods they were selling in the markets. A riot ensued and the British killed 50 women to end the riot.
A new generation of young African leaders came around. They were educated in the United States, England, and France, they sought for independence.
Those who were educated in the United Sates were especially influenced by W. E. B. DuBois, who was educated at Harvard University, and Marcus Garvey,
