Embracing Freedom
Frederick Douglas suffered many hardships throughout his life as a slave in America. His father was supposedly a white man, thus he was taken away from his mother as an infant. He was witness to violent and brutal whippings of family members and friends at a very young age, as well as was subject to these similarly violent and brutal whippings on himself as he grew into a young man. As a slave, Douglas was sent from master to master all around America, making him childlike in his actions in different parts of the country. Despite these hardships, Douglas refused to break under Americas vicious conditions presented to slaves in his lifetime, due to his constant thought of his right to be a free man, his providence in learning to read, the willingness to fight back when he found it unnecessary and inhumane to receive a whipping, as well as his reliance on other African Americans that were of his same position and views. Frederick Douglas was fortunate to have been sent to Baltimore with masters that until this point were of a working class and had never owned slaves. People of America during this time
