The Aboriginal Experience Dispossession And Survival
By early 1925, nearly all of the New South Wales Aboriginal population had been wiped out. There were many factors that had lead to this wipeout.
The first, and most controversial was dispossession. There was competition between Europeans and Aboriginal people for both land and food throughout the nineteenth century. The colonists had different views on land. The colonists wanted it as a possession, to use until its valuable sources were depleted, whereas the Aborigines had a special relationship with the land. They took food from the land, but only enough to satisfy their basic needs. The colonists took traditional Aboriginal land, which they used for sheep pastures and European-style settlements.
