Sir Henry Morgan: Buccaneer Of The Caribbean
To many, the words pirate and privateer bring thoughts of peg legs, hooks for hands, and skulls and crossbones. These swashbucklers of the seven seas, however, have earned an undeserved reputation. While it is indeed true that a good deal of those that armed themselves during the 17th and 18th centuries merely set out for gold and glory, there were a few that were sent out with a specific purpose: to serve their country on the dangerous frontier of the oceans. One of the greatest of these buccaneers, Sir Henry Morgan, was thrust forward into greatness and displayed the ability to fight, lead, and strategize under stress. His exploits also had a strong effect on both his time and current culture.
First of all, piracy and privateering, though often considered synonyms, were very different. The pirate was considered a dirty fellow, driven only by his lust for money and an enemy to all. The privateer, on the other hand, was a gentleman, sent forth with his countrys blessing and hailed as a hero upon return. The privateer was the kings left hand, legally commissioned as a naval support by the government (Winston 4). Ever since 1243, when Henry III of England,
