An Analysis Of The Nat Turner Revolt, Its Aftermath And Significance
The Confessions of Nat Turner and Related Documents, edited by Kenneth Greenberg, allows readers of the twenty-first century to better understand the Nat Turner revolt. The book helps us to understand how people in the 1800s, both white and black, interpreted and reacted to the historic event. Greenbergs introduction, the actual confession, and related documents helps us, the reader, answer some possible questions such as when, where, and why the revolt took place' Why did Nat Turner feel like he was to act out this rebellion' How was life after the revolt' Were there any immediate changes' These questions
The Nat Turner revolt was probably the most remembered act of opposition to slavery. On August 22nd, barely before the break of the day, Nat Turner and a few trusted friends, engaged in a killing spree beginning at his masters house, the Travis residence in Southampton County, Virginia (Greenberg 3). Southampton County is located along the North Carolina border, almost eighty miles from Richmond. Within the county, exist little towns containing convenience stores and a church. The largest town in the county was Jerusalem, having only a population of 175 people.
