Throughout the story of Les Miserables, the realities that the characters see changes dramatically. The events of their lives bring them from unimaginable lows to glorious highs. It "is the march from evil to good, from injustice to justice, from the false to the true, from brutality to duty, from Hell to Heaven, from nothingness to God." Eponine starts out on a path more evil than not. Her father is Monsieur Thenardier. He is always scheming and looking for new ways to make money. He uses Eponine to beg for money and to steal, which she does. Although she is still a young girl, she has already broken many laws. She also develops a crush on Marius, her neighbor. He is in love with Cosette so Eponine tries to keep them apart. First, she will not tell him where she lives, and, later, she takes a letter that Cosette had left for Marius and hides it.

Eponine then goes with Marius to the barricades. There, a soldier gets ready to shoot Marius. Eponine sees this and she takes the bullet for him. She also gives him the letter because she realizes that Cosette will make him happy and that is what she wants for him. He kisses her, and she dies in his arms. She may have started out on the wrong path, but she made up for it in the end. The people of France, mainly the downtrodden and poor, found a path to justice amidst injustice. Many had died fighting for the republic; they had won, and yet, there was again a monarchy in power. They lived miserable lives. They were devoid of hope and they possessed nothing. Enjolras, the ABC Group, and many others took the center of Paris in an attempt to regain control. They all were killed, making them martyrs. France returned to its former state-it was again a republic. The blood of many had brought justice to those that lived on. Inspector Javert lived in a world that was built entirely on false beliefs. He believed that the respectable people, with homes and families, were the "citizens." Those that he considered the "scum of the earth" had no family, no home. He believed that since they had nothing, they respected nothing. He also believed that it was his duty "to protect the former from the latter." He devoted his entire life to upholding his beliefs and "protecting the citizens" from Valjean, who was "the scum of the earth."

Later, when Valjean has the opportunity to kill Javert, he sets him free. The next day, Javert returned the favor by letting Valjean go. He gave up on everything that he had believed-Valjean had not been "the scum of the earth." He no longer sees a reason for living; his entire life had been based upon a lie. Javert ends up taking his life at this point; but at least he died understanding the truth. In the story, there is a boy named Marius. All his life, he has been taught that his father had fought for the Imperialists. He was taught that the Imperialists were in the wrong and that they ruined France. His father had been disowned so Marius believed that he was wrong. However, once Marius found out more about his father, he began to agree with him. He took his father's title of Baron and he ,too, was disowned. He then took up the rebel cause by joining the ABC Club. He saw it as his duty to continue what his father had helped start. He fought at the barricades and was later acknowledged by his grandfather. His feelings toward his father had been brutal from the start but he soon took up his cause. He saw it as his duty.

Another character rose from Hell to Heaven. Fantine's life was her own personal hell. She became pregnant after giving in to a foreman that was harassing her and cutting her wages. She lost her job because she had a child. With no money and nowhere to go, she left her child under the care of an innkeeper and his wife, the Thenardiers. Next, Fantine returned home and worked as a prostitute in order to send money to the Thenardiers as payment for Cosette's care. Fantine was arrested; Valjean, then the Monsieur Madeleine, took her into his care. Knowing that Cosette was safe had kept her going. She loved her daughter with all her heart-Cosette was Fantine's taste of heaven. When she became ill and was dying, Valjean promised to take care of Cosette. Because of that promise, Fantine died happy. Also, as we see in the musical, Fantine went to Heaven, for, many years later, she calls Valjean to join her. The main character, Jean Valjean, underwent the transformation from nothingness to God. Valjean spent nineteen years of his life in jail for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving nieces and nephews.

When he is released, he literally has nothing-no one, no where to go, and no work. He stays with a Bishop, and ends up stealing his silverware. When the police bring Valjean back to the Bishop, he tells the officers that it was a gift. He also gives him the candlesticks, telling him that he "has just purchased his soul for God." At first, Valjean does not understand the words of the Bishop; but, he soon realizes their true meaning, and he turns his life around. He begins using the skills that he learned in prison in order to make money. He uses that money to help others, and, he even becomes the mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer. He brings up Cosette as if she was his own, and he loves her dearly. He continues trying to help others wherever he goes; but Cosette is now most important. She is his life, his love, and his light. She falls in love with a man that is involved in the revolution, Marius. When he is injured, Valjean takes him through the sewers in order to save him for Cosette. The two then get married and Valjean is alone again.

He suffers from extreme loneliness and becomes deathly ill. He still has the candlesticks; they are a constant reminder of the bishop and his words. He says that he hopes that the bishop is pleased with him. He soon dies; but he dies happy because he was loved. He went and joined Fantine in Heaven. Victor Hugo's description of his story is perfect. It is a story of the transformation from everything that is evil and wrong to all that is holy and right. It is truly a march to righteousness. -X
