The Commune was a turning point of decisive importance. It stands at the threshold of the modern age of imperialism. These associations sought to push the country’s timid new republican government to the side and to maintain a patriotic front against the Germans who had laid siege to Paris. The first radical club uprising occurred as early as October and there were repeated attempts over the next several months to replace the moderate republic with a more radical regime. Although labor discontent played a major role in the Paris Commune, other forces also contributed to its outbreak. Primarily the uprising was triggered by the Prussian siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War.
