Marxism Why did the main character, Kim San, become a Marxist' Why did he remain a Marxist' I believe the main character in the book The Song of Ariran by Nym Wales and Kim San became a Marxist because he felt it was the only solution towards solving the problem of Korean independence. As a child he participated in the March 1st movement and like many other Koreans he was initially filled with joy and hope. But his happiness quickly subsided once he witnessed the violent attacks by the Japanese police. His anger that was sparked by the Japanese violence transformed to impatience because he felt that victims of Japanese violence should retaliate, but instead they turned the other cheek. Eventually he realized that it was futile to protest in peace, and consequently he lost his faith in Christian methods of voicing nationalism.
