Martin Luther And The Sacraments The first sacrament that I found to be rejected by both Martin Luther and the peasants was penance. Martin Luther wrote: “absolutely none among outward things…has any influence in producing Christian righteousness or liberty.” What this quote means is that any outside force has no bearing on matters of the soul. This would void penances because the main idea behind them was to have a priest (an OUTWARD force) administer them to you. By having an outward thing deal with matters of the soul one is giving up their Christian liberty to someone who does not have an affect anyway.
