Fire From Heaven In Fire from Heaven, Underdown talks of how many Catholics suffered greatly because of their beliefs during the late 16th and early 17th centuries in England. However, in the first chapter he describes how the devout Catholics believed that the hardships their oppressors encountered were brought on by God in retaliation for them persecuting his people, the Catholics. There are discrepancies however between the book and the historical account given by Hutchins. In the book Underdown talks of the first retaliation coming in 1597. He does not specify what happened however by reading the historical records we can see that a famine occurred during this approximate time period. We can infer that this is what he is referring to even though he does not specify. Next there was a fire in Dorset in August of 1613, which Underdown does not recognize here. The Catholics believed strongly this was again their God sticking up for them. The Catholics felt very strongly that this was a sign from their God to persevere.
