El-Alamein El-Alamein October 23, 1942 The first attack by the eighth army started today at about 9:30 p.m. It has a lot of success on our army. With 1,194 men in the forward area,only 1,021 of us went into action. The rest of them were not fit enough to go. We have 1,400 anti tank guns, 884 pieces of artillery, and 832 field guns. The RAF has over 900 hundred plains. For the first time we actually have an advantage over them. We are led by General Bernard Montgomery he has some pretty good ideas of how to beat the German, Italian troops that are led by the Field Marshall Erwin Rommel. At night the XXX Corps were fighting their way on to Miteirya Ridge and they were also on the southern sector. The XIII Corps also made some progress, but the minefields made a big delay on them. October 24, 1942 This morning we found the body of General Stumme after dying of heart failure while his driving through the 90th light to see what was going on.
