Early Findings They are many reasons why the Spanish were interested in exploration and conquest. One reason was to get wealthy. Private explorers , like Christopher Columbus, would travel to retrieve riches from other places in the world. A second reason was to receive recognition and publicity . The record books put down the name of the finder and his/her country. A third reason was to prove a theory that they believed in. Christopher Columbus expected that the world was round, and figured that he could sail west and arrive in Chipangu. One challenge that Columbus faced is when he thought he was in Asia, when he was really in the Caribbean Islands. Well he thought the islands were full of gold, but turns out that they weren’t. He always claimed that the gold was on the next island. While in Santo Domingo, he was accused of misgovernment. He was arrested and sent home in chains. A second challenge was how long the voyage was and the speed of the ships.
