Causes Of The Civil War In my opinion there were many causes of the civil war. Although slavery was the main cause, in my opinion, many other things led up to the war. First of all the civil war could be called the war for states rights. The states, the southern ones especially, thought that the federal government should not control everything the state does. The southern states thought that the federal government had no right to tell them what they could do. They didn’t believe that the politicians in Washington knew what was best for them. The states also believe that they had a right to succeed from the union. When they were told they couldn’t, it outraged them. This could have led to the first battle of the Civil War. One of the more popular causes of the Civil War is the abolitionist movement. Practically all of the Northern States were free states.
