Catherine The Great Catherine the Great Catherine II also know referred to as Catherine the Great was a powerful and determined Empress who succeed Peter the Great in (1762-7796). Catherine wanted to continue the movement of westernization of the Russian. She thought that the teachings and government of the Europeans were ideal and wanted to impose that upon her people of her country. In 1767 Catherine arranged for new law codes to be drafted which were to illustrate the change she visualized. Catherine’s Proposal for a New Law Code consisted of Two central ideas. Catherine felt there should only be ruler with absolute power and that the citizens of Russia should have liberty and equality but it appeared that Catherine’s view of liberty and equality was forced upon the people. Despite Catherine indicating that the citizens should have a mind of their own; not being abused and enslaved by the landowner, she herself was doing the same. While reading the letter written by Baron de Breteuil I was able to contrast the similarities and difference that were reflected in Catherine’s Proposal of a New Law Code which she felt that the people of Russia needed greatly.
