Anna Pavlova And The Dying Swan Anna Pavlova and the Dying Swan Anna Pavlova is known as one of the greatest ballerinas of all time. She was born in St. Petersburg on January 31, 1881 and began her study of dance in the school of the Imperial Ballet attached to the Maryinsky Theatre. Her main teacher there was Marius Petipa, one of the most renowned choreographers of ballet. Pavlova never became a member of the corps de ballet in any company, but in 1899 she made her debut as soloist and became a principle in 1906 at the age of 25. She toured all over Europe the next year and briefly appeared with the Ballet Russes under Serge Diaghilev. In 1910 was when she introduced herself to America, performing at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. She founded her own company in 1911 and she made her last appearance in St. Petersburg in 1913. In 1914 she married her manager, Victor Dandre, but they kept their relationship a closely guarded secret until the year of her death. Anna Pavlova was not the perfect dancer we believe her to be.
