African American Folklore African American Folklore 1. Some common features of history concerning the Africans in the New World include the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, slavery, transformations in cultures, including aspects such as religion, food, heritage, clothing, art dance etc., and the struggle to become free peoples. The first point I would like to make regards the elementary fable making many uneducated Americans think that a couple of boats came over with some black people and they worked in the Southern U.S. until the Civil War when America justly fought for their freedom. This glorified version of history insults the intelligence of our country and undermines the creation of all society that we take for granted today, skin color aside. The truth is that for two centuries black populations were transported to the Americas and enslaved in numbers sometimes tripling that of whites. (Ch. 5) Another fact not highly noted is that the populations of this slave trade were dispersed not only in the South of the U.S. but also in the North and South America such as Brazil, Argentina, etc. Understanding these facts on such a large scale, I believe is the first step to understanding the big picture; when discussing histories as african, history, place, however, black, food, authority, understanding, one, new, heritage, found, slave, point, interesting, example, africans, about, white, understand, truth, something, slavery, shared, roots, religion, make, even, especially, enslaved, dance, culture, altered, world, way, voodum
