Foods rich in fiber offer many valuable health benefits. In fact, there are five conditions that fiber protects human bodies against: weight control, heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, and GI health. A high-fiber diet may protect against obesity since foods high in fiber, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, are low in calories and provide a low glycemic effect. Almost all dietary fiber comes from plants, whole fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and bran. High fiber foods tend to be low in fat and added sugars and therefore provide less energy per bite, which in turn grants a feeling of fullness and delays hunger.
