Inhaling Lies Inhaling Lies What has happened to the old American celebrities, the Marlboro Man and that once popular Camel' Their billboards have been torn to the ground and their smiling cancer plagued faces have disappeared from magazines. In tobacco born America, how could these important figures in our history just disappear' It’s happened in the most unexpected way. The youth of America has stood up against what they have discovered as a corrupt tobacco industry. The slick Marlboro cowboy first appeared in the 1950’s. During the fifties a campaign with the Marlboro man made Marlboro the top selling cigarette. This is where tobacco companies started their youthful appeal. In a book called, Twenty Ads That Shooked The World by James B.Twitchell, he reveals this shocking truth. “When R.J. Reynolds tested Marlboro on focus groups, they found that it was not rugged machismo that was alluring to young Marlboro smokers, but separation from restraints and a sense of belonging.” (James B. Twitchell, Twenty Ads That Shooked The World. Pg 129) I’m sure tobacco companies had no idea that the Marlboro man would have such an appeal to the youth of America. It shows tobacco, companies, marlboro, truth, reveals, project, one, man, site, minors, commercials, commercial, campaign, ad, the, young, stars, people, page, off, movies, little, just, jan, homeless, don’t, cigarettes, cigarette, been, america, ads, about, youthful, youth, way
