Foods Of Japan Japan is an island nation in East Asia, located in the North Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Asian continent. Japan comprises of four main islands called Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, in addition to numerous smaller islands. Japan’s total area is 145,884 square miles. Together the four main islands make up about 95 percent of Japan’s territory. More than 3,000 smaller islands constitute the remaining 5 percent. At their greatest length from the northeast to southwest, the main islands stretch about 1,200 miles and span 900 miles from east to west. Japan has a climate that is mild and a relatively high population density. Its warm coastal plains support rice fields, citrus orchards, and vineyards. The main ingredients that the Japanese use to cook are: rice, soybeans, fish, and seaweed. The meats they use are fish, soybeans, eggs, chicken, and beef. The grain that is used is rice. Some seasonings they use are seaweed and wasabi (horseradish). Fruits they use as ingredients are oranges, apples, pears, cherries, strawberries, plums, and melons. They eat a lot of vegetables.
