Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the way body cells convert food into energy. When you have diabetes, something is wrong with the production of insulin. Insulin helps your cells take in fuel in the form of blood sugar. If you don’t get enough insulin, your cells start to weaken. When your cells weaken, the food you eat builds up in the bloodstream and damages everything from your blood vessels to your organs.
