Cervical Cancer Cervical Cancer Cervical cancer starts in the lining of the cervix, which forms the opening between the vagina and the uterus. It is caused by the abnormal cells in the cervix (cervical dysplasia) becoming cancerous, but the cause that happening is unknown. Researchers have found that the cause is related to sexual activity. Cervical cancer was one the leading cancer killer of American women. Cervical cancer occurs in women between the ages of 25-35 and in its advanced form ages 40-60. In the year 2000 an estimated 12,800 women have cervical cancer, unfortunately about 4,600 women will die from this diease. These numbers have tremendously declined over the past fifty years. Some risk factors include the following: being a woman especially a woman who has engaged in sexual activity with multiple partners and she is under the age of twenty, has contracted human papillomavirus, and smoking cigarettes. Early detection consists of : an annual pap smear and pelvic exam, and one monogamous sexual partner. Early cervical cancer has no signs or symptoms.
