U.C.M.J. The Uniform Code of Military Justice (U.C.M.J.) governs the armed forces. If a solider breaks a law then he will be subject to the punishment of the U.C.M.J. President Truman enacted the U.C.M.J. on May 31, 1951, so that it would bring all armed services under a unified system of justice. The Code is of great importance to all members of the armed forces. It explains the legal responsibilities of the armed service members and it also states the legal requirements. The Uniform Code of Military Justice has been amended on a few occasions, and all of the amendments have been designed to ensure even greater protection of the individual rights of each service member than were stated in the original code of justice. The purpose of the U.C.M.J. is to provide a uniform application of protection and to assure safeguards in a system of justice for all members of the Armed Forces. The U.C.M.J. is found in Title 10, Chapter 47 of the United States Code.
