Most of these women were single, divorced, or widowed and were supporting themselves and their children. It was not yet common for married women to work outside the home (Gluck 22). The greatest effect war has on people involved is change. World War II brought many different thoughts and ideas within the United States alone. One of the most remarkable changes that occurred during wartime was change in identity for women. As far back as history can tell, women have been limited in mobility and set in particular spaces by society. They were always given a certain “role” and were expected to fulfill those expectations. World War II gave women the chance to prove they were just as capable as men. Rosie the Riveter was a propaganda/ publicity campaign created by the U.S. government. This campaign was created because when men left for war, there were many jobs that needed to be filled. There were also many jobs being created due to increased demand for such products as food, clothing, and ammunition.
