Absolutism What is absolutism' Absolutism is a system of government in which the ruler has total control. The government of King Louis XIV of France is an example of absolutism. While King Louis thought he was being a good ruler to his people he brought suffering to them by using the power of absolutism. Many rulers following absolutism including King Louis XIV had characteristics that they all followed. Expanding the empire was something all rulers tried to do, it only made them more powerful. Engaging wars is also something many rulers did to show how much power they had. Rulers also taxed their people so they can have extravagance.
