The South were rural states, which hinged on agriculture as a means of production rather than industrialization. Since the South did not have many factories manufactured goods brought in more revenue than did cotton, the South’s main product. The North seemed threatened that the slavery-based economy of the South was going to affect their economy, even though “ three out of every four Southerners didn’t own slaves. . . ” Many plantation owners depended on slaves.
