Roosevelt Stuffing The Supreme Court The reason President Roosevelt wanted to expand the number of judges on the Supreme Court was to over power the nine judges on the bench with people who would vote the way Roosevelt wanted. Roosevelt was having some trouble with the Supreme Court that was determining some of his policies unconstitutional. Roosevelt decided since that in the constitution it never gives a set amount of judges that can be on the bench he would add more. With the more judges that voted his way he would have a majority and he policies could not be challenged. Roosevelt could get away with this because the constitution only says that a judge most be approved by congress to be on the bench. Roosevelt had a majority in congress so he could have as many judges approved as he wanted. Roosevelt favored younger justices because a term in the Supreme Court is for life. Roosevelt could appoint some one young and have them there for many years. If he picked his people right they could last 50 years or more.
