Birmingham Jail Letter From Birmingham Jail Martin Luther King Jr., while serving as the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, went to Birmingham to undertake in a nonviolent organization against racial discrimination. While organizing the group with a few of his co-workers they are thrown in jail. Birmingham is one of the leading cities for racial discrimination. Martin Luther states that he would like to send the gospel of freedom further than his home town. He also explains that a wrong anywhere is defiance to justice anywhere. As long as someone is living in this country they are a part of it and can not be told they are not a part of it. In his act against discrimination King has four basic steps which are: Collection of facts; negotiation; self-purification; and direct action. It is also declared that Birmingham is infested with racial separation. While negotiating, store keepers guaranteed that racial signs would be removed from their store. After weeks of waiting either the signs were put right back up or never taken down. That left the last option of direct action.
