Country Study: Jordan Country Study: Part One JORDAN Jordan is a small country in the Middle East that has little geographic diversity, little ethnic diversity, a strong government and a stable economy, at least for the most part. Using the CIA Fact book at www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook to find information, the life consisting in Jordan becomes very clear. Jordan is located in the Middle East, northwest of Saudi Arabia with geographic coordinates of 31 00 N, 36 00 E and a total area of 92,300 square kilometers. The bordering countries of Jordan are Iraq, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the West Bank. The climate there is mostly arid desert with a rainy season in the West occurring November through April. The terrain is mostly desert plateau in the East and highland area in the West with the Great Rift Valley separating the East and West Banks of the Jordan River. As a result of the large amount of desert plateau, little of the land in Jordan is arable at only 2.87%, with even less being used for permanent crops at 1.52%. The remaining land is used for other various things.
