The Law Of Variation The Law of Variation “It’s like I’m living in a gallery!” Life is like a gallery through the eyes of the Matthew Sweeney, because each person you see in life is different from the other. It is only natural for people to be different from each other; it is stated in Charles Darwin’s law of variation that all species will be varied in order to survive changes in the environment. Darwin’s law gives evidence that all humans will vary from each other and the same goes for characters in movie or stories. The characters Matthew Poncelet and Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Man Walking), Homer Wells (Cider House Rules) and Tessie Hutchinson (The Lottery), are three prominent examples of individuals that stand out and attract the attention of others. In the film Dead Man Walking we are exposed to Matthew Poncelet and Sister Helen Prejean, these two characters each have different believes of life and follow different paths from each other; yet their paths connect in the end. Matthew Poncelet is criminal that society would never forgive; he did a horrible thing. Because he had to be executed, Sister Helen Prejean came to his aid.
