Dracula
"The Need for Entertainment at the Woman's Expense"
After watching Francis Ford Copolla's movie rendition of the story Dracula which
was originally written by Bram Stoker, I noticed he made a lot of changes to fit the
preferences of today's society. One such change that I noticed was the elaboration of
certain scenes that seemed to down grade women in a sexual manner.
The first scene that I noticed such an elaboration was when the three vampire
women terrified Jonathan Harker in Dracula's castle. In the novel of Dracula, no nudity
of the three vampire women was ever mentioned. Instead, Harker describes how he feels
when the women come on to him. However, since the movie relies heavily on visuals,
nudity is used to get the point of sex across. Rather than showing any signs of distress
and guilt as he did in the novel, Harker immediatly consents to the calls of the vampires
and engages in a very sexual act with all three of them. Like the novel, but more so in
the movie, the three vampire women are portrayed as mere objects of Jonathan Harker's
sexual fantasy.
The second scene in the movie in which an elaboration was used was when
Dracula lured Lucy Westenra
