Women Of Color In Film As we enter the 21st century, our society still deals with issues of racism. Current cinema and films have diverse representation of women and women characters of color. In spite of this, we need to examine and analyze the subtleties of stereotypes. Webster’s Dictionary defines a stereotype as, “A standardized mental judgment held in common by member of a group; an over simplified judgment. Cinematic and media stereotyping have negative repercussions in this society and perpetuate unrealistic and demeaning images and notions about black women. In a through examination of women of color in cinema, it is evident that the stereotypes of the past are in existence today. Stereotyping of women of color, even in their subtleties is currently reinforced and is still perpetuated in the media and cinema. In old cinema, black women were often defined as “mammies”, SUCH AS Mammie IN GONE WITH THE WIND, the tragic mulatto, such as Whitley in the sitcom, A DIFFERENT WORLD and the super woman, as in the blacksportation movie of the 70’s such as COFFY BABY with Pam Greer and the female Buck, sexually needy, lose or oversexed females. These stereotypes appear regularly in the cinema women, cinema, stereotypes, negative, mammie, color, black, stereotyping, sophia, society, media, independence, examination, character, although, yet, wind, subtleties, stereotype, need, mainstream, loyalty, loud, illogical, gone, characters, appear, about, wit, whitley, supervision, subtly, released, past, old
