This video “Auto Lending: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” discusses the auto loans of the United States and in the video, John Oliver analyzed the essence of the auto loans and potential risks for the borrowers of the loan. According to Oliver, a car which had a Kelley Blue Book value of $5,350 could be sold at a price of $11,000 in the process of loan transfer. Also, targeting poor people who cannot afford a car, the auto loans enabled these poor people to buy a car while they had to pay insanely high interest, at the rates of 19 percent to 29 percent. The unnormal high prices of a car and the frequency of the trade of the car may lead to another crisis, like subprime home loans which finally lead to the economic crisis. From this video, I learned that the auto loans could be a kind of commercial transaction in the United States. However, the issue of the transaction is that the contracts were based on unethical terms, such as the high interest rates (Miller, 2016, p. 266). In my opinion, such contract or transactions should be forbidden because it could not only harm borrowers’ interests, but also lead to great economic risks.
