1. Introduction

It is universally acknowledged that Christian has a significant impact on western culture, especially western religion. In order to make a better understanding of western culture, it is a priority to familiarize with then history of Jesus. The paper targets at making a comparison between two films, namely The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ with a view to having a clearer idea about the history of Jesus. Before making comparison, a brief introduction of the two films will be made first.

1.1 A brief introduction of The Last Temptation of Christ

The film of The Last Temptation of Christ is an influential work made by Martin Scorsese. The background is established under the cruel ruling of the Roman. During that period, the great populace were living a very hard life. And Jesus who has been endowed duty by God acts as a savior of the world. As a savior, Jesus has to sacrifice himself to save the whole world. On the way, he made acquaintance with Judas and propagated the creed together. Later, Jesus walked to Jerusalem with his disciples. Jesus showed his marvelous abilities all the way. However, the disciples were in great danger of being killed by Roman. Several days later, Jesus had been crucified. It seemed that an angel came to tell him that he was free from the responsibility endowed by God and he was allowed to live as others. After several decades, Jesus was in bed and met with his principles. Judas criticized Jesus for his betrayal of the mission. At that moment, he came to realize that the person who was with him was the incarnation of Satan. Hence, Jesus was in dire sorrow and regret. He returned to crucifix, thus getting rid of the temptation. He finally become immortal.

1.2 A brief introduction of The Passion of the Christ

The film of The Passion of the Christ is directed by Mel Gibson. This film has authentically depicted the last twelve hours left in the life of Jesus Christ. This was also the day when he was tortured in Jerusalem. It is also said that this was also the most barbaric torment after his incarnation as a human being. The story began from a night when Jesus was sold to Jewish aristocrat and waken with fear, disappointment and shock. As a result, he accept the capture. In the end, after the dinner, Jesus began to pray under the ceaseless temptation of Satan. However, Judas who betrayed Jesus had pushed Jesus to the crucifix. And Jesus had been in captivity in Jerusalem. And it was strongly demanded that Jesus should be sentenced to death.

2. Comparison

The film of The Last Temptation of Christ ever caused significant influence all over the world. This is, if not exaggeratedly, a film which has successfully integrated the relation of “physical” and “ mental” and the conflict of “soul” and “reality”. One of the theme of the film is sacrifice and redemption. For example, before Jesus walked to the crucifix, he ever asked the God, “God, is there only death? Which is more beautiful between paradise and the world created by you?” The world is ugly, but people favor; the paradise is ideal, but people are skeptical. However, Jesus was still willing to sacrifice himself to save the human beings. In the film of The Passion of the Christ also highlights the theme of redemption and sacrifice. Both of the film have revealed the spirit of Jesus. Moreover, both of the film are indicating that evil can be conquered and love is everywhere to be seen.

Besides, the difference resides in that this film also depicts the magic power of Jesus. People tend to warship saint for a long time. In order to catch the eyes of the audiences, author especially reveals the commonalities in Jesus. When it comes to the forwardness, fear and panic of Jesus, it is astounding found that Jesus is no longer a saint but a common person. Especially, the weakness in Jesus echoes with the great populace. In part, the film also pays special attention to the process of becoming a saint from a common person. A saint means that he is able to refuse all the outside temptations, such as power, sex, wealth etc.

Then, the theme also differs greatly. The film of The Last Temptation of Christ tries to convey that Jesus is not willing to die. His death is under the pressure of the God’s will. When he walked to the crucifix, he is still skeptical of the value of death. Even Jesus said, “death is the only way to immortal. The people that you love haven’t died but they become immortal” However, Jesus is not indeed in poise when being crucified. However, the film of The Passion of the Christ attaches great importance to the process of being tortured. And the torture for Jesus is a way to save the world.

In contrast, the film of The Passion of the Christ has exerted a great impact on those people without religious beliefs. The film focuses on how Jesus was tortured and a series of details. And the depiction of all these details touched the inner heart. Firstly, this film has successfully shown a good picture to the audiences visually. The images in this film are full of heroism. It can be safely concluded that the torture of Jesus( the incarnation of the God and killed by human beings) is always a risky film. In addition, the film is in consistence with history. Christ did not blame those people who betrayed him since it was firmly held that the sins perpetrated by human beings are the radical reason for Christ torture. Christ became man and men became killer. In this film, there natural time and two religious time have been elected. The natural time refers to the tine after dinner. The religious refers to torture day and resurrection day. However, the torture in this two kinds of time is incredibly consistent with the Jesus’ previous history, religion and culture. The whole process of being tortured is vividly and directly presented on the screen. This is tangible for audiences. And every detail is able to incur the fear, curiosity, hatred, sympathy in people’s heart. Form this perspective, the two films are similar in presentation. In the movie of The Last Temptation of Christ , the commonalities embodied in Jesus make people realize that Jesus is a utter common people instead of a saint. This extremely similar traits have resonated with the audience just as the torture resonated in the film of The Passion of the Christ. The commonalities in Jesus such as sex, greed, wish to live all have greatly attracted the audiences. And the torture given to Jesus in The Passion of the Christ also greatly resonates with the current plight for the modern people. That is to say, the expression of the two films are charismatic. To some extent, the film has little to do with religion, thereafter, the audiences who are ignorant of religion are also able to feel the torture of Jesus vicariously. The real intention of the director aims at not only presenting the torture of Jesus to the modern world, but also sets out to recast a world full of the fight between justice and devil. The picture of torture and resurrection has permeated into personal experience, thus extending to the personal plight in reality. It is marvelous that the expression and actions concerning torture and resurrection has gone through all kinds of torment in history. The picture is so real that people are bound to figure that all the torture in Jesus is to save human beings The Jesus torture is also trying to convey that : Love your enemy and pray for those devil. One will get nothing if one only chooses to love those who love him. In this film, wisdom is not the highest power for human beings but love. Love has far gone beyond culture, language, color, race, gender and social status.

To put it in a nutshell, it seems that human beings will lose the kindness, beauty in life. Mel Gibson aims at making a sharp comparison between Jesus’ torture and humanity. The theme of the film makes people see the hope of life, even a little. It is perchance that the world is not so bad and human beings are responsible to make it more beautiful. Both of the film revolve with the legendary figure-Jesus in history. There both exist differences and similarities in theme. However, different emphasis has been placed to different points. Having made a comparison between the two films, it is not hard for readers to perceive the theme of the two films. Since Christ has exerted a significant impact on western culture, it is highly proposed that the two films should be seen.
