Two main topics are concentrated on this reflection paper. One is Confucianism and the other is Daoism. Both of them represent Chinese thoughts about the humanity.

For Confucianism, it mainly focuses on four aspects of Li, Ren, Cheng and Xiao, which are closely related to people’s daily life. For these four thoughts, they are not independent but intertwined.

Firstly, Li means ceremony, rites, or ritual propriety. Initially, Li refers to sacrificial rites in ancient China. Then it has served to social etiquette and ceremonial conduct of daily life. Li requires people to have rituals in conducting any matters in daily life. In any relationship, Li is in the prominence, which can maintain a sound relationship. Confucians believe that the essence that human beings differ from animals is ritual conduct. Nowadays, the theory of Li is also widely applicable in the society. Traditionally, everything should be carried out in a ritual manner and people should have rites in doing anything. Otherwise, it will be considered rude and lack of rites.

Secondly, Ren is the most important thought in Confucianism. The meaning of Ren is in a wide range, which represents not only kindness and carefulness to others but also a term of achievement against which self-cultivation is assessed. Ren is connected with Li. According to the thoughts of Confucianism, someone who is kind must have rites. Someone who overcomes oneself is regarded as a disciplining of the self. Someone who overcomes the egoistic oneself can be realized through performance of the rites. Ren can be applied in almost all aspects of daily life. The influence is profound that Ren has become a core personal quality of human beings not only in China but also all around the world.

Thirdly, Cheng is developed on the basis of the thoughts of Ren. Cheng means sincerity, without deception, ceaselessness, without presumption and integrity. Currently, Cheng has become a standard to judge people’s personalities.

Fourthly, Xiao is a thought discussing the relationship between children with their parents. Xiao means filial piety, which represents children’s care to their parents. Traditionally, Xiao is used to require children to obey their parents’ regulations no matter how old their children are. Under any circumstance, children should listen to their parents and meet the parents’ expectations. However, this kind of obedience is no longer applicable. When children grow up, they are independent and have their own thoughts. What is emphasized is the willingness to remain open to engaging with one’s parents. In a word, Xiao is not equal to obedience but requires children maintain a sound relationship with their parents.

Confucianism can be regarded as a religion, because it has influenced people’s moral concept and behaviors. Its thoughts are not just spiritual thoughts but closely related to people’s life. In the 21th century, it continues to influence Chinese generations and has been widely spread all around the world.

For Daoism, as another important school of Chinese traditional thought, it mainly focuses on two perspectives. One is Dao and the other is Wuwei.

Dao means the ‘way’ as particular responses to ‘How’. In other words, the ‘Way’ is conceived as being metaphysically of a different order from the things of this world. The way is real but different from the ordinary. Therefore, Dao is a metaphysical interpretation of the world.

Ziran, or nature is full of the ‘Way’. On the one hand, nature is a system of living creatures. Nature has its own laws and human beings should conform to the laws of nature. On the other hand, he nature is changing spontaneously every day. Daoism believes everything is in constant transformation, which cannot be changed by the willingness of human beings. During the transformation, the form of existence is also spontaneously. The self is contextual, and being human is but an aspect of the transformation of things.

Wuwei, or literally no action, is the core essence of Daoism. No action doesn’t mean doing nothing but has rich connotations. Firstly, no action means no action on the incipient. During the early stage, there is no need to perform interventions. Under this interpretation, Daoists only appear not to act. Secondly, no action means acting without ulterior motive. Daoists do not act with a particular outcome in mind. It advocates that people should act but not expect a specific outcome. Thirdly, Daoism requires simplifying desires. It advocates that people should live in a simple live, putting aside the fortune and material matters. Nowadays, it is popular that someone without desires can live longer which is conformed to the thought of Daoism. Fourthly, Daoists respect spontaneous play. Things develop spontaneously and people should also live, die, decay in a spontaneously way.

Confucianism and Daoism are two important schools of Chinese traditional thoughts. However, they are different mainly in two dimensions. On the one hand, Confucianism tells people what they should do and behave in their daily life, but Daoism is a kind of metaphysical philosophy of revealing the principle of the nature and the attitudes towards life. On the other hand, Confucianism promotes becoming a noble person with sound personalities like rites, kindness and filial piety. Daoism promotes becoming a genuine person who knows the laws of nature and know the essence of life.

In a nutshell, Confucianism and Daoism can be regarded as religions, because both of them have clear advocates and profound meanings, which will continue to play an important role not only in China but also all around the world.
