In the last few decades, technology has been developing at an astonishing speed, and it has greatly changed our lifestyle. Computer and information technology have o changed almost every aspect of our daily lives. This is an era of "digital natives". People grow up in an immersive computing environment. In this era, technology turns out to be very helpful in shaping the way we work, study and entertain. It is reasonable to believe that the technology can contribute to fair competition across of racial, gender, and geographical differences (Castro). Technology also has a significant effect on higher education. Nowadays, students come to class with smart phones, laptops, or iPods, with which they can memorize or look up information at their best convenience. It’s not only helpful but imperative to adopt technology in higher education. The essay will discuss how technology improves higher education from three parts. The first part will dwell on the benefits of distance education. The second part will delve into learning management systems, followed by a discussion of multimedia teaching. The last part will be ended with an analysis on the change of campus lifestyle after the invention of technology.
Due to the development of technology, the creation of distance education (also named as online learning) is an innovative breakthrough. The uniqueness of distance education is proved to be beneficial for students who cannot be present physically for classes. Compared to traditional teaching method, it has many advantages. First of all, distance education is much more flexible. Students can choose different courses in the ways that they like. When the students start to study with the computer, it is actually helping students establish themselves in the dominant position of the learning process. Moreover, distance education teaches the students according to their aptitude. Students are able to learn without the limitation of physical presence at school, so they can avoid the time and space constraints that exist in traditional teaching model.
In addition, distance education offers a more relaxing learning atmosphere since it’s conducted online. With the help of distance education, students are said to have a stronger ability to think independently or in a more critical approach. They are likely to figure out how to exchange, cooperate and communicate in a better way during the course study. According to Haddad, and Draxler, (2002), the most important advantage of distance education is that as a kind of multidirectional communication activities, students can compare the knowledge from different learning resources, understand and digest what they have learnt. And it is also beneficial for students to construct the meaning of new knowledge.
The most impressive part of learning management systems is that they can do scientific statistics and integration of data and contents. In other words, learning management systems can standardize the management of information and reduce the workload of the management. It can provide online courses and augment on-campus courses (Kerschenbaum, 15). The framework of the learning management systems is to handle all aspects of the learning process. According to Szabo, and Flesher (2002, p.929), the learning management systems and infrastructure provide the management of teaching content, the identification and evaluation of individual and organize learning targets. The systems also track the target through the meetings progress to collect data and provide supervision organizational learning process. Learning management systems promote the access to the learning content and network management. With the help of education institutions, it can promote and support classroom teaching and appeal to a larger population of learners at the same time. It can also help managing the continual professional education, improving collaborative learning as well as training resources management. Network marketing activities is able to expand the scope and success of recruitment and fundraising efforts. Unlike direct mail campaign, instant messages or online communication can reach people immediately, which can strengthen the tie among the alumni or the relationship between the university and the sponsors. Plus, technology also reduces the cost of a direct mail campaign. Most importantly, technology offer students more options in academic research. Teaching management systems makes teaching and study much more effective due to its power in the integration of teaching contents and data. Both teachers and students can collect abundant information about teaching content or teaching practices through the internet. Technology makes multimodal teaching and curriculum forms of online research possible. Technology enriches multimedia teaching modes because of the miscellaneous choices of multimedia tools. Multimedia tools make the interaction between the teacher and the student much more effective so as to improve the effect of the teaching and learning. Technology has also changed students’ campus lifestyle in many aspects such as academic study, making friends, and engaging in extra-curriculum activities.
To conclude, technology is playing a fundamental part in improving higher education. However, technology can also jeopardize higher education if it’s used improperly. For instance, some teachers may give little creative thinking on their teaching content because of the easy access to other teachers’ achievements or students go after instant result by spending too much time online instead of independent thinking. Despite the negative influences, technology is still one of the greatest inventions in human history, we can make full use of technology in higher education as long as we take heed to avoid its potential damage.
