Introduction
This essay is to discuss a recent news on China’ s decision to cooperate with Singapore to establish an international transport hub in an inland city, Chongqing, and to discuss what influence and results will be caused by their practice in worldwide logistics industry. Besides, it will explore the reasons why the two governments made the blueprint for logistics development.
A summary of the news
Recently, Chongqing, an inland city with rapid economic growth, is intended to work with Singapore to set up a fund to support a large-scale international logistics center. On 1st January 2016, President Xi Jinping visited Guoyuangang in Chongqing, and got a better understanding of Yuxinou which is a part of sites chosen by the program. The international foundation aims to build a new transportation system with Yuxinou, Chongqing Airport and Changi Airport as bases and Asia as its operational scope. The project can effectively reduce transport costs and decrease delivery time of luxury goods in Singapore (English.news, 2016).
Reasons for the international practice
As shown from their purpose, reasons for the Sino-Singapore cooperation are visible: the two countries could benefit much from the international transportation system which provides rail and air transport services for domestic and overseas clients because the scope of potential customers within the program includes China, Singapore and Europe as a wide network. Besides, while Chongqing is an inland city with adverse conditions like mountains as transportation barriers, it has achieved economic boom so that it can afford the giant expenditure of the project (Lafarguette & Jayaram, 2011). The Chinese government intends to make national logistics system more improved and beneficial to all people in the countries for its most complete and advanced transportation network are located in cities on coasts such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong (Cui, et al., 2012).
Results and influence of the cooperation
The decision made by Chinese and Singapore will bring about influential results in international logistics industry. In the first place, the new hub will spur the overall development of Chongqing in various respects. Frequent logistics businesses can attract more foreign direct investment (FDI) in Chongqing to obtain convenient and qualified logistics services. As a result, Chongqing’ s economy can be driven by the transportation center which can promote logistics prosperity in this city. This establishment can force Chongqing to take measures to enhance its logistics network to meet the international hub’ s standard. It is fair to say that this decision can exert a long-term influence on Chongqing itself because it gives the metropolis an opportunity to transform from an inland region with hardly satisfying logistics services to a dynamic place with improved logistics system.
The secondary advantage is to strengthen the transnational trade between China and Singapore by increasing foreign businesses and in turn enhance diplomatic relations between them. By co-operating the large-scale system, China and Singapore can have more communication and goods exchanges cross the border. The center can also drive the construction of logistics network. The integrated sea and air transportation can also contribute to closer foreign relations by increasing their trade contact.
Lastly but not least, a transportation center, especially an international one, can draw different countries’ commercial interests in two countries because the facilitated hub can reduce transport costs and cut down on distribution time. Worldwide investors, manufacturers and dealers will regard it as a platform to contact with people in different countries. Consequently, the center can accelerate globalization and function as a driving force to countries involved in it.
Conclusion
The planned logistics hub in Chongqing has a great deal of potential and a bearing on all countries committed to foreign trade or transportation. It is safe to say that China and Singapore can reap numerous benefits from it.
