Child labor is an increasingly popular and frequent phenomenon for some of the families whose family’s finances are simply like shaky raft. So a fair knowledge can be obtained that under such a detrimental family financial condition, most parents may have no choice but to sell their children to some other families that have the ability to hire those children. With the increase of the incidence rate of child labor, more and more people begin to doubt whether child labor should be advocated or forbidden and what attitude they should keep toward the phenomenon of child labor. There is no doubt that whether child labor should be advocated or forbidden will directly matter a lot toward the life and destiny of those children so that this issue has to be paid close attention to. Taking the significant influence of child labor into consideration, this paper will focus on the causes and effects analysis of child labor so as to provide some detailed suggestions as for how human beings should behave toward child labor.
First and foremost comes the causes analysis of child labor. It is stated that many children will be sold by their parents at the age of five or six to the employers due to poor family background and it will be decades or even a lifetime for them to regain their freedom out of the fines heaped on them whenever they make mistakes. It can be easily found that parents would like their children to solve all their daily necessities without starving even though their children will lose freedom under such circumstance. For the sake of bread of their children, parents have to reluctantly sell their children and they regard children’s survival much more crucial than their freedom. To put it into more specifically, as parents of those children cannot afford the expenses of even the meals of the children and they would not like their children to starve to death, they make a difficult decision in the end to sell their children as employees as long as they can be fed for all their meals.
Another cause for the incidence of child labor is that parents of those children would rather their children to survive through begging, prostitution, thievery, violence as well as some other unfavorable experiences like that. Detailed speaking, if those children are not sold by their parents or relatives as employees to others, then they may wander homeless through the streets and their ribs will stick out through the rags they wear. They have no money to afford their meals so that they have to bear the sufferings of hunger and they have to live in poverty all the time. But the truth is crueler than that and usually it will be too much for them to stand so that they may later step onto the road of theft, burglary together with some other illegal behaviors. What is a pity to say is that all the aforementioned actions will lead them to embark on a road of no return and they may not be able to get away with it at last. So the mind of protecting their children from suffering that much, parents reach their determination to let their children become the forced or indentured child labor.
For better convincing the audiences, the example of Nimai is taken who is sold by his uncle at the age of ten because his parents are too poor to feed all their several children. It is also added that Nimai’s older brothers have also been sold to others as employees working in the field. Through the example of Nimai, it can better show that child labor can really help deal with the meals of those children and can prevent those children from a series of illegal issues like begging, prostitution, thievery, violence. Also, child labor has helped children to produce a sense of pride because of the earnings they have made on their own by working.
With the causes analysis of child labor being elaborated on in the above, what follows is the effects analysis of child labor. David Cody in his study describes that during the period of Industrial Revolution, a family may not be able to support itself if there was no children to be employed (David Cody. 2008). Furthermore, he demonstrates a fact that “in 1840 perhaps only 20% of the children of London had any schooling, a number which had risen by 1860, when perhaps half of the children between five and fifteen were in some sort of school, if only a day school or a Sunday school; the others were working” (David Cody. 2008), from which it can be indicative that the phenomenon of child labor actually quite prevails at that time.
Moreover, in the paper of Irwin Yellowitz, it is shown that eighteen percent of all American workers were under the age of sixteen in 1900 although the number of the children laborers was decreasing over these years (Irwin Yellowitz. 1970). The rationale why many businesses prefer children laborers lies in that those children laborers have the advantage of small size which allows them to move in small spaces and they can be paid lower. In this way, the phenomenon of child labor will happen and it can get the approval of some employers in one way or another.
Conclusion
To sum up, the causes of the phenomenon of child labor mainly include the poor family financial conditions, parents’ intention to protect their children from illegal behaviors and parents’ hope that their children can be fed. As for the effects of the phenomenon of child labor, it can be found that though the number of children laborers is decreasing with the passage of time, there are still a large majority of children laborers from the general trend. And it is betted that the elimination of child labor calls for more future efforts and there is still a far way to go for that.
