Soldiers’ Family Life Being Unhappier Than That of the Public

With the phenomenon that soldiers can be greeted with more respect prevails in recent years, more and more people would like to become soldiers in order to enjoy a lot of welfare benefits. And it is also argued that soldiers’ family life is happier than that of the public so that many people would like to marry soldiers and they long for the life together with the soldiers. Some people even hold that soldiers same as heroes and they admire them a lot. Whenever it comes to the idea that soldiers’ family life is happier than that of the public in one way or another, a negative voice will always cry out that soldiers’ family life is actually unhappier than that of the public in many ways and to marry soldiers is not a wise choice at all. As far as I am concerned, there is no doubt that I am in favor of the latter opinion that soldiers’ family life is unhappier than that of the public so that it is not advocated to marry soldiers, which will be elaborated on in the below.

Soldiers’ Family Life Being Unhappier Than That of the Public

First and foremost comes that soldiers need to spend more time in dangerously working than the public. For example, submarine force is now on 24-hour work day and it is stated that sailors serving abroad submarines have worked a different work day than the rest of the world for years (Military Advantage. 2015). That is to say, more time of those soldiers are spent on work and they do not have much time to spend with their family members. When they work for longer hours, they are worth a great deal of sacrifice. As a result, the children and the wives or husbands of those soldiers will complain that the soldiers have not accompanied them for long and they expect that those soldiers are not soldiers anymore so that the soldiers can accompany them. It can be easily understood that those soldiers may be unhappy for this job in that they seem to have been deprived of the chance to stay with their family members. It is common scene that when those soldiers are called for by their family members at a specific moment, they cannot turn up in time and their family members are put into a state of helplessness. Sometimes if the wives or husbands of those soldiers cannot be considerate of those soldiers’ full absence for the whole household, they may choose to divorce those soldiers, which can be used to explain why the divorce rate among soldiers is higher than the great majority of the civilians.

With longer work hours of soldiers being mentioned at length in the above, what follows is that when soldiers retire, they have more body health issues as well as having problems in psychological health (National Institute of Mental Health. 2015). On one hand, many soldiers will be injured to disability in wars when they are at service, leading to their inability to deal with their daily issues after their retirement. In this way, it will naturally add the burdens of the family members of those soldiers as they have to take care of the soldiers’ everything either small or large, leading to their having less time to tackle their personal issues. What’s worse, some soldiers may directly die for wars and they cannot come back home any more, which will catastrophically influence the whole family. The family will turn to be a single-parent one so that children in such families will not feel happy as their obtained love is not complete and these children may be despised by their classmates. For the life partners of those soldiers, it will be rather difficult for them to make a living only by themselves and they have to take all the responsibilities for the whole household on their own.

On the other hand, those soldiers’ psychological health will in the meantime be damaged more or less. Most soldiers have experienced the harm of wars and they also have fear towards wars. Under the long-term influence of fear toward wars, the soldiers will have a greater possibility of getting PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) (National Institute of Mental Health. 2015). People who have PTSD will still feel stressed even when they are not in danger and their stress disorder will continue even after their retirement. Though all the people will get PTSD at any age, PTSD will mostly happen to war veterans because they have gone through several traumatic events in wars and they cannot get themselves completely out of the harm of them. Or maybe it can be put in another way that the life of those soldiers will be impacted by wars even after their retirement and they cannot live a life as ordinary people.

What I would like to mention afterwards is that as those soldiers have experienced rigorous training and such training is overall and systematic, most soldiers tend to be strict with them and they are under high pressure all the time (Djanikian, Gregory. 2004). So those soldiers will accordingly be strict with their children and they do not laugh under most occasions, leading to those soldiers’ children afraid of them to a certain degree. Children from soldiers’ families will prefer to express their thoughts with their peers and they might in the meanwhile hope that they are not born in the soldiers’ family. And in the families of the soldiers, there seem to be few jokes and the atmosphere is quite depressed so that all the family members in the soldiers’ family cannot relax themselves and they have to behave themselves even at home. Thus we can all have a fair knowledge that under such a depressed atmosphere in the family, the family members can absolutely not live happily and their life satisfaction rate will be lower than that of the public.

Furthermore, the soldiers will increase the crime rate in that some of them are unemployed after they leave the army so that they turn to crime (Nevin, David. 1973). These soldiers have donated most of their time and energy to the army when they are young and they have really sacrificed a lot for it. But the fact is that they are unemployed after they leave the army, resulting in their extreme psychological unbalance. And it can be predicted that under the urge of their extreme psychological unbalance, they may develop a twisted personality and they may at the same time commit crimes. Once they have committed a certain crime, they will be punished and their whole families will change to be in a total mess. There is no doubt under such detrimental effect, their family cannot be happy at all, let alone being happier than that of the public.

Conclusion

To sum up, the soldiers’ family life is undoubtedly unhappier than that of the public and they have suffered much for this job for the following reasons: longer work hours; both body health issues and psychological health; depressed atmosphere in the family; higher crime rate etc. Therefore those people who have the intension to marry soldiers should have second thoughts before they make their final decision even if soldiers can have better allowances and regular wages after retirement. There is no doubt that there are other factors as have not been referred to in this paper due to the text limit which calls for future researches.
