Nowadays, mental health problem is becoming a quiet crisis brewing on university and college campuses, with more and more students suffering from various kinds of psychological problems, such as stress, anxiety, depression and so on. According to a recent study (Eisenberg et al., 2007, pp.534-542), almost 16% of undergraduate and 13% of graduate students are influenced by depression and anxiety. In addition, an annual survey (Mistler et al., 2013, p.13) carried out by the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors has also found that 41.6% students fell victim to anxiety, 36.4% students had emotional problems on account of depression, and 35.8% students felt distressed because of relationship problems. In my point of view, the causes of college students’ mental health problems are poor academic performance and inefficient time management, which can be probably overcame through education assistance and extracurricular activities.
One of the main reasons why college students feel stressful is lower academic performance. People usually consider it is students’ responsibility to achieve great academic results. Additionally, excellent academic performance is always regarded as a guaranty to a good job. This kind of conception will make parents and teachers put great emphasis on grades, which can bring enormous pressure to students. The study conducted by Kausar, R (2010, pp.31-34) showed that students with lower grades on exam/projects/courses are more likely to give up or drop the courses due to mental health challenges. The situation of graduate students is even severer. By reason of academic workload, graduate students who spent plenty of time working on assignments reported high rates of stress.
Apart from lower academic performance, another reason of university students’ mental health problem is that they cannot manage time effectively. In order to promote good health of mind and body, it is significant for college students to learn how to manage their time effectively (Wyatt and Oswalt, 2013, pp.96-107). Although graduate students focus more on academic work than undergraduate students, they usually lack balance in their personal life. They spend much time in libraries or laboratories, disregarding to the cultivation of hobbies and communication with other people, which means they lack effective ways to release pressure. If students can not keep a balance between study and personal life, they cannot enjoy the true joy of life.
Considering the rising mental health problems of college students, efficacious measures must be taken to solve these problems. To begin with, education assistance should be advocated and publicized extensively to alleviate stress among undergraduates. For example, universities can provide students with tutoring, extra instruction and academic assistance, which can exert positive effects on students’ academic performance (Wyatt and Oswalt, 2013, pp.96-107). Also, universities can hold different seminars for students to exchange study methods as well as experience, and discuss academic questions. This not only can offer students with useful study methods, but also help students develop communication and personal skills.
In addition to academic assistance, universities should also develop rich extracurricular activities aiming at the social and cultural needs of graduate students (Wyatt and Oswalt, 2013, pp.96-107). Different from undergraduate students, graduate students suffer more from study and have fewer chances for social interactions. Campus-wide activities, such as culture festival, sport meeting, and reading party, could be held to enrich graduate students’ life. Beneficial activities can effectively release students’ stress and provide chances for them to make more new friends.
In conclusion, as a result of lower academic performance and less effective time management, college students suffer from mental health problems. To solve these problems, universities should provide students with education assistance and campus-wide activities. There is no doubt that college students themselves should also build up a positive attitude towards life. Only by keeping a balance between study and personal life, can we live a healthy life.
