The plot:
In fact, in the story Fathers and Sons, the protagonist is called Arkady Kirsanov, who was an intelligent student graduating from a university with a high educational degree. For him, he had returned to the estates that belonged to his father one day with his good friend Bazarov. However, although his dad with really glad to let the two young men stay in his humble estate for a long time, the brother of the protagonist Arkady Kirsanov’s father, was not very happy because of the nihilism concept proposed by them. (Ripp, 1980)
At first, the story was all smoothing and pleasant because the father of the protagonist Arkady was very glad that his own dear son had returned home after years of university education. However, everything had changed because it was obvious that his own son tended to be influenced by his good friend Bazarov too much that now he always kept talking and bragging about a lot of very radical and crazy ideas. Slowly, the father was frustrated as his son’s words made him feel like he was too out dated. Later in the story, the protagonist Arkady’s father tried to adopt a young servant named Fenichka in the house but later she was pregnant because of the father so they had a baby as well. To the father’s surprise, his son Arkady did not feel unhappy or repelled against it. On the contrary, he was more than glad that one young brother had come into his life. In fact, after a period of time when these two young people had stayed at Maryino, they had the desire to visit other relative so they headed out to do so. When they visited this young relative’s house, they met a person named as the Madame Odintsova, whom they both admired a lot because she was very elegant but at the same time, she was very independent for her own intelligence and good thinking. It was obvious that because of her good figure and great thought, both men including the protagonist Arkady as well as his friend were all attracted to his lady. However, she was more interested in Bazarov because of this special manner so the man was invited to spend several days at her home. During the time when Bazarov spent time at his dream lady’s home, all people in the story had experienced great and dramatic changes because they both had developed stronger and greater interests in the sister of Madame Odintsova, which is called Katya. (Ripp, 1980)
It is true that this experience for the majority of people might sound very interesting and common but for the character Bazarov, he was stressed and upset for this encounter because developing such strong feelings towards this madame is in fact against his support of the nihilist ideas. However, after experiencing complicated relationship with Odintsova and her sister, in the end, he decided to go back to live with his own parents and thus Arkady also chose to accompany him to go back. (Ripp, 1980)
In fact, when they had returned to the humble estate, their parents were so glad to receive them and have them back again. According to the traditional viewpoints of the parents at the time in that area, they value the traditional image of people who are so ideal and humble with wonderful virtues. During the meantime, Arkady kept telling the father of Bazarov that he thinks that his son would be able to have a very bright future but this had offended his friend Bazarov as Bazarov believed that he should not act too frankly. What was worse, this Bazarov in support of the nihilism thought that his friend was too much over the lines for the joke that he made.
In the latter part of the story, the protagonist Arkady has realized that he was so deeply in love with the lady Katya instead of her sister Odintsova. As a result, they both decided to start a relationship and get engaged. However, on the other side, Bazarov was getting involved in a fight with a man called Pavel because both of them were too deeply in love with the same woman named Fenichka, in which Bazarov managed to beat Pavel in the end. The story ended with the man Bazarov dying on the deathbed because of a minor accident in which he cut himself and caught the disease of blood poisoning. In the end, it was a relief that before he died permanently, he still had the chance to meet his beloved lady to tell her how beautiful he thought she was. For the protagonist Arkady, he chose to marry the lady Arkady and due to his right, he could be in charge of the management of the estate at his father’s home. (Goscilo, 2010)
In fact, the basic idea of the story is that both the father and the children at the time of the Russian history tend to have a larger gap than before such as the man Yevgeny Bazarov who was a total nihilist who was so determined to reject the older beliefs. (Ripp, 1980)
It should be noted that even in the nation Russia which became one of the most powerful states back in the twentieth century, people were still too stubborn and narrow-minded over a lot of things. For the sons in this story, like Arkady and this goo d friend Bazarov, they both supported the nihilist movement as they both supported the new idea which was in contrast with the old Slavophiles, the old and traditional Russian beliefs that the old generation like their fathers supported.
As far as I am concerned, the name Fathers and Sons is in fact the concept of new and progressive viewpoints contrasting the old and traditional Russian beliefs. However, as far as I am concerned, in this story, the contrast viewpoints have perfectly been reflected in what had happened here. For example, in their romantic encounter with different madams such as Odintsova, they had to face the troubles of being in this complicated affairs while they had to choose whether it is necessary to follow their own heart.
In fact, all historians believe that it is a great story as this amazing piece of literature has been the most important novel that is linked to the Russian history back in the nineteenth century as the beliefs of the people have been directly relevant to the traditional ideas that were promoted by the former generation. In fact, I think that what happened to the protagonist as well as his good friend had perfectly reflected what the people back in that period were experiencing. Also, those people in the nineteenth century actually started to understand that it is important to get away from the traditional viewpoints as only in this way can people move on to new life. (Ripp, 1980)
Let us get one thing clearly and straightly. In the middle of Nineteenth Century, Russia was an unstable regime, which was a world full of conflicts, environmental problems and social upheaval. At that time, the argument of the development model of Russia was not "the Prussian Road" or " American-style road" as there was no option for the American way. The small number of radical revolutionaries who have promoted the peasants' revolution aimed at realize the utopian nature of the socialist, which doomed to be a failure as it lacked the basic requirements, like weapons and unifying ideology. In essence, the peasant movement without the nature of Capitalism is a spontaneous and non-organized force, which was in need a guiding principle. The new Russian bourgeois liberal movement was not about the choice of development path. In contrast, they urged to reform the regime. Tsarist regime played a decisive role in the development road, who took a relatively independent policy that neither is answerable to the conservative nobles, ore tolerable to the revolutionary movement and the peasant movement, but insisted on the Capitalism Road dominated by the original regime to enable Russia to become the country of Capitalism.
It is necessary for me to know the background of Russia at that time. For one thing, it is this background that enables me to have an insight on the characteristics of the characters. As far as I am concerned, the main character is Bazarov, who is a civilian intellectual with strong and extreme revolutionary spirit. Firstly, he strongly denied the existing system. To some extent, Bazavor's negation has its historical rationality as the existing system did not fit the global trend and undermined development and threatened the foundation of democratic states that was the requirement of historical progress. Although author does not appreciate this kind of aggressive and passionate spirit, he makes a real description. At the same time, He's openly contemptuous of aristocracy which is an important feature of the self-realization of the civilians. Bazarov firmly believed that he owned the truth and he was the hero of the age at the bottom of his heart so that he was entitled to despise the aristocracy. Holding a calm attitude toward Bavel's anger and challenges, he often regards him as not worthy of serious consideration. He was some kind of flattery as he always worships the winner in the debate or in a duel. Moreover, he took a pride in being a civilian, keeping closely contact with ordinary people. Bazarov is different from the Rostov, who was no longer a follower of the outstanding aristocratic for he has realized that vulgar is superior to aristocracy, which is also an important symbol of the rise of civilian forces. In my view, Bazarov is of invincible willpower and he is full of confidence, full of vitality and with sharp critical vision.
While Bazarov represents the younger generation of 1960s-- radical civilian intellectuals, Bavel and Nicholas represent the old generation of conservative Liberal aristocratic. It seems to me that fathers and sons, of course, have different attitude and measures in dealing with the novel things, which is the root leading to conflict. Nicholas was relatively open-minded, in the hope of keeping up with the times, he struggled to regenerate his thoughts but not too successful. When it comes to Bavel, he was a persistent person who only had the faith in aristocratic liberalism. As a result, he took the rebellion of young people to the heart, which gave birth to the fight in the end with Bazarov. The conflict between father and son, in a broad sense, is the antagonism between Bavel and Bazarov. Thus, Bazarov belonged to the new era.
All these cause the fight between fathers and sons, reflecting the struggle between civilians and nobility. After I read the story, I have a deep understanding of Russia at that time. Russia, this ancient country, like an elder who is weak and fragile, lags behind other countries. Many young people cannot bear the sight of the conservative, feudal and conventional habits. Under this circumstance, those youths who have the ambition will concentrate their energy and time to force reform so as to revitalize the country! Thus, the first Russian "new people" in the history of Russian literature- Bazarov--appeared. He was among the first to convey the information that the civilian intellectuals has become the life protagonist, giving people a vivid impression with extraordinary artistic individuality.
In a sense, this classical literary work is an interpretation of the ultimate meaning of human culture, integrating every reader into the country and the era that the book describes. In the aspects of thoughts and emotions, "father and son" explains the concept of progress and ideas, playing the role of inheritance and purification, enlightenment and inspiration.
In conclusion, the tradition that can be passed to another generation must have its existence value, which is the fruit of human civilization. The most valuable asset, if blindly destroyed, must be a pity and must don't need to wait till today! It is the youth's impulsion and reckless behaviors that cause the undesirable effect. We ought to understand that "power" is not answerable for this! Therefore when we are going to fight, don't forget that we are all responsible for history. There is an old saying that:" One companion of your life path means that you have one more friend. . Fathers no longer feel lonely with their sons, who can go through the road hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder. This is a road that may be tortuous or smooth. When father has difficulty, the first thing that comes to his mind is his son, or vice versa, when son has a dilemma, the first thought is his father. A good communication is required when conflict happens between father and son as it is the effective way to solve problems. The old generation and young generation should grasp every opportunity to exchange their ideas and thoughts so that they are able to maintain the relationship and emotions!
