In the book, the narrator Rosemary started her story in the middle of her life in 1996, when her “twin sister” Fern had vanished from her family for 17 years and her elder brother Lowell disappeared for 10 years who left for looking for Fern. The children of the Cooke’s were brought up in very distinct way from other children, because their father is a scientist who studies animal behavior and has brought his work home, making experiments with his own children, who imported Fern as a family member but removed Fern after 6 years’ get along, without full preparation left for his girl and boy. Actually Fern is an animal, and not the sister of Rosemary and the loss of which should not be the desperate thing for the family, however, the loss still damaged the family to separate parts. The family took care of Fern as a human being, like their own daughter, that makes the loss of Fern a substantial hurt to the family. The brother Lowell had left home for years and became an extreme activist for violent animal rights group wanted by FBI. The father began to drink, and the mother was weighed into depression.
The disappearance of first Fern and then Lowell has become a huge wound inside Rosemary, and made her change from a quiet talkative child to a silent and sensitive adult. A psychologist father who always immersed in work and “could conduct experiments around the breakfast table”, a grandmother Donna that "conspiracy is folded into her DNA like egg whites into angel food cakes", an abandoned “twin sister”, a run-away brother, and a mother who “easily devastated with a broken heart” mutually contributed to her fragile psychology status. Rosemary has avoided talking with any one about Fern, or celebrating her same birthday as Fern, and pretended to forget the truth that she was brought up with a chimpanzee, and even moved far away to leave this fact behind. Although Fern is an animal, Rosemary viewed Fern as not only her twin sister but the most close friend accompanying her since the very beginning of her life, long before she formed a clear world view or judgment, and the young girl can’t resist such powerful physical effect that she began to unconsciously imitate Fern, which becomes the reason for her being isolated as the “monkey girl”.
The guilt of abandoning Fern and the sear of being called “monkey girl” dragged Rosemary down and she refused to accept the truth and embrace future. People would believe what they want to believe and try to forget things that they don’t want to remember, they are convinced because they want to be convinced, frequently as a normal and common defensive measure for self protection and self relief, like Rosemary refused to acknowledge that she was brought up with a chimpanzee. Besides, the loss of Fern also means a loss of Rosemary herself, a deny of her past, as she mentioned in the book that it has a mirroring effect in both ways between her and Fern, while for herself, she had to abandon the habits learnt from Fern and started to behave like a normal child in the kindergarten.
The sadder thing to Rosemary is that Fern would not remember her and her family any more, which is another kind of loss that strikes more heavily on their hearts. Rosemary has wondered dozens of times that if Fern would be happy after being sent away and if she would still remember Rosemary as her family. Rosemary mentioned that she was jealous of the new family of Fern, who can replace her to play with Fern. It is a loss of belonging sense that made the narrator miss Fern to a great extend.
What makes the end relief is that eventually Rosemary accepted the truth she has been raised with a chimpanzee, and she had deep emotion on Fern. The habits learnt from Fern as she was a child, helped her became a kindergarten teacher that knows small children well. She could use the skills and is good at understanding the kids, and at the same time she could face the chimps by teaching her students via close relations with chimps. She strived out of the guilty loop of getting Fern sent away, and tried to be her true self, although as she said, she has not become the real her self, which is a difficult plan for all the human beings. At the end of the novel, Rosemary and Fern meet each other, and Rosemary prepared a lot and tried to remind Fern of her, to make up the loss so many years, to some kind. Although she has been unfamiliar with the acting way of Fern, she recognized everything of her at the very same time, and it comes to the realization of her finding herself in the whole real world – also a warm and healing medicine to her broken heart in so many years.
