Ophelia is not the protagonist in Hamlet. She has only appeared in five scenes of the twenty. Her behavior in front of almost all male characters and the emotional relationship with Hamlet have reflected Ophelia's insignificance in the play. In addition, before going mad, Ophelia had almost no chance to express her true feelings. Even if she had the opportunity to express her own thoughts, she often showed absolute obedience. Ophelia was noble and beautiful, but the long-term male oppression and manipulation gradually transformed her from the obedient angel into a rebellious mad woman.
Ophelia’s obedience is shaped by her family. In Act I Scene 3, Polonius entered the room. After knowing that Hamlet had repeatedly confessed his love to Ophelia, he said: "Affection, puh! You speak like a green girl, unsifted in such perilous circumstance (1.3. 110-111).” Polonius, the father of Ophelia, was the first to think of Hamlet's intentions, not what Ophelia felt, mocking her as a "green girl." Ophelia, who was accustomed to obedience, answered: “I do not know, my lord, what I should think (1.3.113).” This shows that under the control of Polonius and Laertes, Ophelia, who has long been voiceless, lost the ability to think on her own and defend herself.
Ophelia's lack of voice is not only in front of her family, but also in front of her pursuer Hamlet. Hamlet has repeatedly shown love to Ophelia, but he rarely tried to understand and care for her. In Act III Scene 1, Hamlet met Ophelia after expressing the classic monologue of “to be or not to be (3.1.64)”. He not only questioned Ophelia rudely about her virginity: “are you honest?” “are you Fair (3.1.113)?", but also mentioned "nunnery (3.1.140)" a few times. The suspicion and dissatisfaction of Hamlet undoubtedly constituted verbal violence. In contrast, Ophelia was almost deprived of the right to speak for herself.
The death of her father was a turning point for Ophelia. Ophelia's consistent obedience and attachment to men has kept her feelings and desires in a state of oppression, and her mental disorder has just become an opportunity for her to express her inner desires and dissatisfaction with the patriarchal society. In Act IV Scene 5, Ophelia sang a folk song: "Tomorrow is Saint Valentine's day, All in the morning betime, And I a maid at your window, To be your Valentine (4.5.53-56);” "Before you tumbled me, You promised me to wed (4.5.67-68)." These lyrics show that the insane Ophelia was finally able to express her lust.
The voiceless and tame Ophelia is the product of the patriarchal society. Even though Ophelia was born noble, she was still oppressed and controlled by men for a long time, and she was gradually tamed into an obedient angel. Ophelia eventually became mentally ill. While being mentally ill and refusing to act according to the wishes of men, Ophelia truly expressed her long-standing emotions and desires. In fact, the poor marginalized women in this patriarchal society only gained short-term physical and mental freedom after going insane. This tragedy reflects not only the tragedy of Ophelia herself, but also the countless oppressed women in the same era.
