It is mentioned that the Bible had been brought to the attention of the Congress due to the following reasons: Firstly, the bible was widely used in the society that those who work in the political parties believed that it is important to import Bibles from other nations such as Polland.
The Bible was considered to be the divine truth or middleman of God. At that time, rumor has it that the Congress decided to import the Bible for a variety of reasons and people thus made different assumptions, for example, some people think that Bible was imported for the Indians. However, for me, I think when the members in the political parties have made a decision or carried out certain laws, they are not thinking for the sake of the public. On the contrary, although some of the political conspiracies sound ridiculous, I believe that the decisions that they make usually are relevant to the benefits that the decision will bring to the party itself. However, it is mentioned that the Bible that they print out is not affordable for the majority of people, which is quite ridiculous as their prior aim was to make sure that the Bible should be promoted in public.
I think this part fits the title perfectly, which is “Liars for Jesus”. As the congress made such a decision to help the American public to know the bible better, it ended up looking like a political stunt. Firstly, the public cannot afford the paper but then the Congress fell into the argument about whether they should import paper and other tools from the place Philadelphia. They denied this option in the end as that place was the British colony and they think that they should not take the risk to important paper from there. From this part, it is obvious that the nation or the political leaders made decisions which benefit themselves and their previously claimed goal about informing the public sounded more like the propaganda.
Also, in the book, it is mentioned that in order to make sure the government is qualified, those who work in the government need to make sure that the members must have religion, morality as well as knowledge. At the time, it is necessary to keep good education and schooling among the students. In fact, to be more precise, it means that the bureaus were thinking that it is appropriate to education students about religion, as he has put in the book “….who wrote the First Amendment did not consider promoting religion in public schools to be a violation of that amendment.”
I think this issue should be looked from different angles. It is indeed illegal in some countries like China to promote religion in public, let alone promoting it in public schools, in some developed nations, this act has been encouraged for decades. As far as I am concerned, I think that it is important to teach children knowledge of certain religion because religion helps people to have firm beliefs and a strong faith. However, in the book Liars of Jesus, the process about how the members in the Congress had been arguing about the issue of whether it is alright to promote in public schools about the religious knowledge. However, the arguments that they have made are not relevant to the benefits of the students themselves. On the contrary, they have focused on the questions about whether promoting religious knowledge in public school is in violation of the Amendment. I think this is ridiculous but it also has proved the title of the book well as the readers are informed that sayings about God being the divine truth sometimes turned out to be the political stunt and chaos. Besides, in the book, it is also mentioned that “no money shall be drawn from the treasury for the benefit of religious societies or theological or religious seminaries.” From this sentence, it is obvious that from the political arguments about how the bible should be promoted, the problem that the members from the Congress are concerned about the most is the economic issues. Laws and rules had been made clear that although the goal of religion sounds wonderful, the most basic conflict comes down to the economic development.
In fact, I would recommend this book to those who are interested or not interested in religion because it is not a book preaching the grandness of religion. On the contrary, it has enlightened us with history of religion that the majority of us are not familiar with. In addition, the title itself might sound a bit offending to the firmer believers of religion or the followers of gods, but it has presented to us the issue from a totally different perspective. It is also a good teaching material for students who intend to learn how to think critically and looked at issues from new angles. Also, there are many quotes from the historical documents, which might be instructive to the learners of the American history as well.
