INVICTUS
1) Is violence ever justified in a struggle for freedom and equality? Explain
Yes, it's no doubt the price human being pay for freedom and equality in the history was high. It's too high sometimes people even doubt whether it worth it. To identify the question we have to confirm that the most important in our life is self-achievement. And it can only happen in a society of freedom and equality.
2) Would you risk your life in a fight for your freedom? Explain
Yes in times of wars. In this case, freedom for all people is beyond everything, including our life. But when the term ‘freedom’ narrowed down to racial discriminations or culture difference in a region, I believe the best way to gain freedom is self thriving of the whole group and tough negotiations with the authority.
3) How does each side feel/think about Mandela being elected President?
The white criticized Mandela not being capable of running the country and would make them lost their jobs. While the black were thrilled and passioned and believed Mandela lead South Africa enter a new era. They respected him.
4) What are something’s Mandela does to help ease the tension when he takes office?
Say morning to everyone and being nice, gathered everyone to guarantee them he would not judge by their color and language and asked for their help to contribute to the country.
5) Why did Mandela feel sport was a way to unite his country?
Mandela was imprisoned for more than 20 years and during that period he saw his fellows play football in the prison yard. It may be that time he realized that sport had certain effect to inspire its players and bring people together emotionally. This belief even became central to his political beliefs.
6) Give specific examples of other countries that have used sport to overcome obstacles in their countries?
1977, China and America has first diplomacy through Pingpong for 22 years’ deadlock. This changed the opinion of American towards Chinese and deepened their knowledge of Red China.
1983, India won the cricket in the World Cup which indicate the uprising of this country and eased the tension between India and Britain. Indian also saw the potential strength of their country.
7) What are other ways to overcome racial/cultural differences? Answer with 2-3 ways you think and then find specific examples (2-3) others have.
In the movie, Mandela was so nice to the white. He employed white people to be body guard even if they had attacked and tried to kill Mandela before.
From my perspective, two points are quite crucial in overcoming racial/cultural differences, that is, mutual understanding and doing things together.
So to promote emotion relationship and recognition, we can advocate the idea of equality and mutual respect of different races and culture in public and schools.
And by cooperation to reach a common goal people from different race or culture are more likely to become friends (probably because they consider each other as their partners or fellow in the course). So holding activities of different kind would be helpful in this term.
8) What is 1 specific plea Mandela makes to the council not to do and why is this so important to him?
Mandela asked not to eliminate the color of uniform, badge and name of The Springboks which represented apartheid. Because
if the council took away Springboks, white people’s treasure, the country might lose their suppore. It’s not the time to celebrate the victory of the black but the time to unite the country.
9) Give at least 5 examples of how different people/characters in the movie change towards “their enemy” and what brings the changes on. In other words, why do they change.
1. Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years but he forgave people who put him in prison as well as those who had tried to kill him. He said being elected as president was a victory to some extent.
2. Pienaar, the team captain, believed time’s changed and stood out to follow Mandela. He was deeply moved by the act of Mandela.
3. Jason was angry about the body guard at the beginning but changed attitude for common goal of protecting the prisidnet and sharing victory of the final.
4. John used to look down upon the Springboks, but in the final, he said the Springboks ‘the beloved Green and Gold’ to show his respect.
5. The black little boy refused to accept the used Springboks uniform at the very beginning and considered it a failure. But in the final, he strongly support the Springboks. That’s the symbol of elinminating apartheid.
10) Did you like watching this movie? Why or why not?
Yes especially when you’re low and frustrated. The movie is very inspiring and I just motivated by it. Mandela is really a hero in many respects.
11) What lesson will you take from the movie?
Always move towards your goal, spare any effort and struggle for it.
Difficulties and adversities are always ahead of you, just find ways to beat them and move forward. And the most important is be a leader is to be selfless and impartial.
12) What would you say to your president if they asked you to help?
If the president asks me to help, it may be a great honor. So I would say ‘my pleasure and I would do whatever you ask me to do.’
