Who's that female hero?

Good morning (afternoon), ladies and gentlemen:

Today, I would like to share something about Rachel Carson and her famous book Silent Spring as well as her significant influence to the protection of global environment. I sincerely hope that all of you will learn something from it. 

Have you ever read Silent Spring? Maybe some of you have read it. This book was number 78 in the National Review's 100 best non-fiction books of the 20th century (nationalreview.com). The great readers’ response forced the government to ban DDT. This book made a critical difference in launching the environmental movement and calling greater awareness of environment. It is surely one of the landmark books of the twentieth century. Another question: Do you know DDT? DDT is a kind of pesticides and it has been banned for a long time, which is spurred by the publication of this book. It is said that DDT is harmful to the environment and it proves to cause cancer. As someone who really admires the Silent Spring and the unprecedented influence it brought about, I have also learned something about its writer Rachel Carson and will share this information with you.

Rachel Carson devoted herself into the research about the detrimental effects caused by DDT, prompting the start of her popular book Silent Spring in 1962, which strongly ignited the concern of environmental problems caused by synthetic pesticides (the New York Times). 

Now that you know what Silent Spring is about and who the female hero is, let's first look at how she focused on the use of DDT as well as how she came to write the famous book Silent Spring.

The gypsy moth eradication program prompted Carson to devote her research to pesticides such as DDT and environmental poisons, which is the start of silent spring.

Now here comes to the link between the gypsy moth eradication program and DDT briefly. As we know, the gypsy moth fed on the foliage of hundreds of species of plants. In order to save plants, the gypsy moth eradication program was staged. The gypsy moth program involved aerial spraying of pesticides such as DDT which was developed with the help of military funding start from World War II.

At the beginning, people all admired this pesticide’s role on the process of eradication. However, a research proved the connection between many kinds of pesticides and cancer. Therefore, Carson, with the help of NIH librarian Dorothy Algire, found proof to support the pesticide-cancer connection as well as the evidence about the link between pesticide exposure and the environment damage, wrote the famous book Silent Spring.

As a result, the publication of Silent Spring caused a series of environment movements. According to Carson scholar and environmental engineer H. Patricia Hynes, "Silent Spring altered the balance of power in the world. No one since would be able to sell pollution as the necessary underside of progress so easily or uncritically." It was influential for the start of ecofeminism. Here, “ecofeminism” is a term that means women participate in the environmental movements（wikipedia）. Furthermore, it started campaign to ban the use of DDT in the United States. In addition, Silent Spring was partly responsible for the fierce ecology movement and the powerful strength of the grassroots environmental movement since the 1960s.

After the national ban of DDT, it is obvious that the ecological system becomes better. However, there are still many environmental enemies that human being should fight against in the coming years. We still have a long way to go.

Now, here comes to the conclusion about what I have shared. Rachel Carson is a famous marine biologist. She devoted herself into the research about the detrimental effects caused by pesticides, prompting the start of her popular book Silent Spring, which strongly ignited the concern of environmental problems caused by synthetic pesticides.
